Electronics recycling fees are being reduced - 2011-07-05 You may have experienced some sticker shock since the inception of Alberta's recycling program in October of 2004. Your "bottom line price" for new electronics was a surprise, when the program added up to $45 to the purchase price of a 46 inch or larger t.v. These fees are called "advanced disposal surcharges" and are collected at the point of sale, which means you DON'T have to pay anything to recycle your old electronics. The program has been a huge success, and it has kept over 70,000 tonnes of metal, plastic and glass out of landfills and recycled into new products. Due to changing technologies, lighter weights and less expensive recycling costs, the environmental fees will be reduced as of August 1, 2011. That's right - FEES REDUCED. That's a statement you don't hear every day, especially from a government organization! Following is a table of the previous cost, and the new one:
These new fees this will reduce the purchase price of new electronics starting on August 1. It's not a large amount of money, but every little bit helps.
