Anti-virus Software Scam - 2011-07-28 There's a new computer security phone call scam out there and it's sweeping across Alberta. Several Benson employees have friends or family members who have been targeted in this scam. It starts with a phone call from someone who claims to work for Microsoft or a virus alert company. They tell you they have detected virus alerts from your computer and need to install software to prevent hackers from getting into your personal computer and stealing personal info and credit card numbers. They then give you instructions on how to allow them to access your system on-line, often using programs like TeamViewer, so they can "clean up" your computer. Then they ask for money in order to complete the inspection, requesting your credit card number. It may seem like common sense to ignore the call and hang up, but they're a wily bunch and make it seem very legitimate. NEVER respond to a request from anyone to remotely access your computer - unless it's your trusted service provider like Benson & Associates. And never give your credit card number over the phone unless it was YOU who initiated the call to purchase a service or product. The phone calls appear to be coming from the following numbers, but any number you don't recognize is suspicious: 1-510-943-3040, 1-661-380-3000, 1-510-943-3046 Often the origin of this phone call is: 510-943-3040 Country: USA Location: California, but these numbers are likely router numbers, so they could be coming from a call centre in India.
